RYAN'S FRIENDS

Welcome to Ryan's Bar Mitzvah website! We're really happy you'll be sharing Ryan's special day with us. A lot of you have probably never been to a Bar Mitzvah, so you probably have tons of questions. There's more information throughout the website, but here's what you need to know in a nutshell!

What is a Bar Mitzvah and what exactly will I be doing there?
At 13, a young Jewish man becomes obligated to observe the commandments of Judaism. "Bar Mitzvah" literally means "son of the commandments." The celebration of a Bar Mitzvah signifies that the young man is beginning and will continue to function as an active and responsible Jew in the synagogue and in the wider Jewish community.

So what does that mean exactly?

Ryan has been learning Hebrew since kindergarten. He's been studying specifically for his Bar Mitzvah over the past year. Ryan will read a lot of Hebrew at the service, but there will also be a good amount of English. He will lead the service and there will be a lot of interesting traditions for you to see.

Please arrive at the synagogue by 10:15 a.m. and expect the service to last for approximately 1.5 hours.

What should I wear?
Girls should wear party dresses. Boys should wear dress pants with a dress shirt. Ties and jackets are optional. They can also wear a suit if they want to.

Please remember that you will be in a place of worship beforehand, so girls--please bring either a light sweater or wrap to cover your shoulders if you're wearing a strapless or sleeveless dress. Boys, you have the option to wear a yarmulke on your head when you enter the synagogue.
