BEN'S FRIENDS

Welcome to Ben's Bar Mitzvah website! We're really happy you'll be sharing Ben's special day with us. A lot of you have probably never been to a Bar Mitzvah, so you probably have tons of questions. There's more information throughout the website, but here's what you need to know in a nutshell!

Q. What is a Bat Mitzvah and what exactly will I be doing there?
A. At 13, a young Jewish man becomes obligated to observe the commandments of Judaism. "Bar Mitzvah" literally means "son of the commandments." The celebration of a Bar Mitzvah signifies that the young man is beginning and will continue to function as an active and responsible Jew in the synagogue and in the wider Jewish community.

So what does that mean exactly?

Ben has been learning to read Hebrew since kindergarten and he's gotten really good at it. He's been studying specifically for his Bar Mitzvah over the past year. Ben will read a lot of Hebrew at the service, but there will also be a good amount of English. He will lead the service and there will be a lot of interesting traditions for you to see. Please arrive at the synagogue by 4:30 p.m. and expect the service to last for approximately an hour and half.

Q. What should I wear?
A. For the service on Saturday afternoon and the party immediately following the service, girls should wear a dress or skirt with a top. For the service, shoulders should be covered if the dress or top is sleeveless. Boys can feel comfortable wearing either a dress shirt with slacks or a jacket with any type of shirt.

Q. What will the party be like?
A. Lots of food, games, music, dancing...and a whole bunch of other fun stuff! We have a dj who will be entertaining everyone. After all of Ben's hard work, this is the time to relax and celebrate!
